Why revenue integrity starts at patient access
By Anna Carter
Ask a revenue cycle leader where denials come from and the answer is usually "coding". Look at the root causes, though, and a large share trace back to the very first touchpoint: registration, eligibility and prior authorization.
The front door sets the ceiling
A claim can only be as clean as the data it starts with. A mistyped member ID, an expired plan or a missing authorization will survive every downstream step and surface weeks later as a denial — when it is far more expensive to fix.
The cheapest denial to work is the one that never happens.
Three habits of high-performing access teams
- Verify eligibility in real time at scheduling and again before the visit
- Treat prior authorization as a tracked workflow, not an inbox
- Measure first-pass registration accuracy the same way you measure clean claim rate
Where technology helps
Automation is most valuable where the work is repetitive and rule-based. Eligibility checks, benefit discovery and authorization status polling are ideal candidates, freeing access staff to spend time with patients instead of payer portals.
Start with the data you already have
Pull your last 90 days of denials and tag each one by the stage where it could have been prevented. Most teams find that the fastest wins are at the front of the cycle, not the back.
